John Howell, Conservative MP for Henley, has announced that the Conservatives would abolish regional development agencies and regional spatial strategies if the party was to gain power.

Speaking at the HBF's planning conference today (September 15), Howell added that the party also wished to "return to the idea of sustainable development running through the planning system."

Howell said: "We want to restore democratic and local control over the planning system. We are pro-development and sustainable development - it is not just about delivery of numbers, but about a change of culture."
