Talented seven-year-old Theo Stephens has won a wildlife-themed colouring competition designed to highlight some of the native species living in Hailsham.
Children from Hawkes Farm Primary School were invited to take part in the competition organised by Taylor Wimpey, which is building The Grange, a range of new homes at Welbury and Woodholm Farms in Hailsham.
Theo’s vibrant frog and newt caught the eye of independent judge Jo Rhoades from Fox & Sons Estate Agents in Hailsham, and the lucky pupil received the winner’s prize – a £20 WH Smith gift voucher.
Marie-Claire Travis, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey, says: “We have introduced a Wildlife Protection Plan to care for a wide variety of native animal species during construction at The Grange, and felt it would be lovely to share information on some of these weird and wonderful creatures with children at Hawkes Farm School.
“As well as providing a fact sheet explaining how we are carefully collecting and rehoming great crested newts, slow-worms and grass snakes to a safe marshland and grassland habitat nearby, we wanted the children to think about what the animals look like – and that’s why the colouring competition was important.”
Taylor Wimpey is also preserving ponds, trees, hedgerows and grassland areas close to The Grange, which is located off Hempstead Lane on the edge of the South Downs and the southern Forest Ridge. Ancient woodland also runs adjacent to the site, and the Cuckoo Trail, the former route of the dismantled branch railway line.
