The government's proposal to cut down on the red tape needed for house owners to install eco equipment must be controlled carefully, according to an expert.

Andrew Leech is executive director of the National Home Improvement Council and his comments could be highly pertinent for those looking into property investment ideas.

He said although equipment such as wind turbines and air source heat pumps were good ideas for homeowners as ways to lower a residence's carbon footprint, there are some potential problems involved, such as "disputes with neighbours and so on if a wind turbine appears at the bottom of a garden which is directly in somebody's line of sight".

Overall, however, making it easier for consumers to install environmentally-beneficial equipment is a good thing, Mr leech explained - but caution should be exercised to make sure things do not "go overboard".

Proposals for a three-month consultation on the issue were unveiled earlier this week by housing and planning minister John Healey.
