Builders of affordable homes are working towards "challenging targets", it has been claimed.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, made this comment in relation to carbon goals which must be met by 2016.

He continued by saying that 2010 represents a challenging time for home builders in general.

Mr Turner explained: "The main constraint at the moment is mortgage lending. People can't get access to realistic deals to allow them to buy homes so, as such, developers are not going to build something that the customer can't afford."

He also said that the government must continue to support the housing industry and the development of new property schemes.

These comments came shortly after John Healey, the housing minister, announced that the government is putting an additional £122.6 million into the building of new council homes.

The money will be shared between 73 local authorities covering every region of England.
