London is well on the way to having 50,000 more
affordable homes by the 2012 Olympics, according to its mayor.
Boris Johnson welcomed this week a family into their new home on the Gallon Close development in Charlton, south London, which was part funded by the £1 billion investment made by the mayor into the Homes and Communities Agency.
The seven four-bed houses on York Terrace are also the first to meet the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5 rating, making the project an exemplar of sustainable and high quality design.
Mr.Johnson confirmed that over 20,000
affordable homes had been built since he made the pledge in 2008 to provide more homes for
first time buyers and families.
He said in a statement: "These 20,000 homes will change forever the lives of thousands of Londoners. But let's be very clear, this is just the beginning.
"There is a huge need for affordable housing in London that we simply must meet if we are to retain our position as one of the best cities in the world to live and work."
