New home buyers are beginning their hunt online, says the country's biggest homebuilder.

Barratt Developments revealed that nearly all their home purchases had originated from online enquiries and the web results in approximately 4,000 leads every week.

Mark Clare, chief executive of the group, said there had been a surge in inquiries partly because of the bad weather.

"People haven't been able to get to the sites, but the good news is that people have been doing an awful lot of shopping online.

"I’d hope that once the snow clears, those people will visit our sites."

In the group's trading report published yesterday, he also confirmed that a recovery in the housing market was evident from a four per cent rise in house prices.

The company also concluded in the report that it expects average selling prices to be boosted by a further 8 to 10 per cent during the full financial year.
