Swindon Council has confirmed that an ambitious new project aimed at bringing a number of
affordable homes to one of the most-deprived areas of the town is nearly completed.
The £5 million project is geared towards rejuvenating the Penhill part of the Wiltshire town, with a particular emphasis having been placed on making more social and affordable housing available to local families so as to boost community spirit levels.
To this end, the council has been working alongside the Westlea Housing Association to oversee the development of 31 new homes, due to be advertised to locals within the next few months.
Commenting on the project, Vic O'Brien, group development director for GreenSquare, Westlea's parent group, told the Swindon Advertiser: "This project has been some years in the making so we're all excited that it's now well under way.
"From the outset, Westlea Housing has worked alongside Swindon Borough Council and directly with local residents so it feels great to see the project nearly complete."
At the same time, the Whitby Gazette has reported that plans for a further 68 new homes in the town look set to be given the official green light by the local planning authorities within the coming days.
