Energy-efficiency: the benefits of buying new
David Bexon, Managing Director, smartnewhomes.com - It’s hard to imagine a time when homes didn’t have something as ‘simple’ as central heating. Two generations have grown up waking to a warm home, even if most of the heat has then escaped through badly insulated lofts and draughty windows. The idea of lighting a coal fire before breakfast seems positively Dickensian.

Homebuyers believe that the school catchment area of a property can be a big selling point, according to new research.

Some 32 per cent of people surveyed by East Midlands-based developer David Wilson Homes would want a house close to good schools.

David Wilson Homes has now teamed up with the Good Schools Guide, to provide an online service for parents with school-age children, who want to find which developments are right for them and their children's education.

Prospective buyers will be able to type in the name of a David Wilson site or a postcode and the Good Schools Guide search engine will generate a list of nearby schools.

In addition to this, the site can also pull up the Ofsted results for each major subject.

Philip Lacey, sales director at David Wilson, said: "Schools are a major consideration when we buy land to build our developments.

"We understand that parents want the very best for their children and that often it's the school that dictates where they live - not the other way round.

"We are introducing this service now because parents who plan to move in time for the new school year often start house-hunting during the spring selling season. We believe that our school-finder will give them a head start."
