New proposals from the Conservative party could allow home-owners to have more say in the planning of their neighbourhoods.

The party launched its Open Source Planning green paper yesterday, in which it revealed plans for communities to collaborate with developers in designing homes in their immediate environment.

According to the paper, the present planning system does not take into account differences in the size and nature of communities.

Rather than having to lodge petitions against planned developments, home-owners would instead take a key role from the start, through organising neighbourhood meetings and being given access to plans online.

Inspired by a model of a community planning scheme in the the US, the paper says: "Communities should be given the greatest possible opportunity to have their say and the greatest possible degree of local control. "

The party claims that the proposals are intended to simplify and make accessible the current planning system, as well as balancing the demands of conservation and development.ADNFCR-1100-ID-19632647-ADNFCR
