Town planners and property developers should not be stopped from delivering on regeneration and environmental goals, an industry expert has warned.
Kate Henderson, the interim chief executive of the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), said that new Conservative party proposals for reforming the planning system could create more uncertainty for investors.
However, she applauded the ideas to transform development at neighbourhood level, with communities being given more input into the planning process.
Ms Henderson said: "At a crucial time in the country's economic recovery, it is important that the planning system's ability to deliver on key challenges such as employment, housing and renewable energy is not set back."
Support would be needed by local communities to tackle the new changes and have the confidence to take part in decision-making, she added.
Criticisms leveled by the TCPA included that the paper did not detail how developers and communities can meet environmental standards and goals such as the government's 2016 target for all new homes to be zero-carbon.
