Social housing developments will be fitted with energy saving features in a test run that could see them lead the way in cutting carbon emissions in the property sector.
The government launched its trial 'Retrofit for the Future' today (February 25th) that will involve 87 housing projects being refurbished with insulation upgrades, intelligent heating systems and advanced systems that distribute heat efficiently around the home.
Funded by both government housing and business departments, the initiative brings together social landlords, local councils and other specialist suppliers to develop ideas for the test homes.
If the results are successful, the government and researchers will work on developing low-cost versions of the same technologies, that could influence the building of new homes in the future as well as changing existing housing stock.
One of the first prototypes will be a house in Eltham, that will retrofitted by the Hyde Group.
It aims to cut CO2 emissions by 80 per cent in the property, which is in a conservation area in the south London suburb.
