The government launched its green loan scheme today that will enable householders to make their home energy-efficient and greener.
Homeowners will be able to claim loans of up to £10,000 from supermarkets, DIY outlets and their local authorities under the Pay-As-You-Save scheme, which allows them to pay the loan back from savings they make on future fuel bills.
Described as the "great British refurb", homes could be made over using new energy-efficiency technologies, as well being retrofitted so families can produce their electricity supply or claim money from feed-in-tariffs if they have surplus energy.
Speaking about the scheme at the Copenhagen Summit last year, environment minister Ed Miliband said: "Many British householders want to reduce their emissions, but are put off by the upfront cost of installing insulation, solar panels or ground source heat pumps. Pay As You Save will trial different ways of paying for this week so it's affordable.
"One-quarter of the UK's total emissions come from homes, so householders have to be part of the solution to climate change."
