Youngsters at Bluebell Childcare Centre in Linslade, Bedfordshire, have learned a valuable lesson about playing safe – thanks to a special visit from Taylor Wimpey North Thames.

Thirty children aged from four to nine years old were taught about the hazards of playing on or around building sites by Taylor Wimpey Health and Safety expert Kyle Goodall.

Each child who attended the session at Southcott Lower School, Linslade, was presented with a hi-visibility vest and learned how they could be hurt if they were tempted to stray on to the leading housebuilder’s nearby Heath Meadows development in Leighton Buzzard.

They were all invited to produce a poster highlighting the important health and safety messages they’d learned and these were judged, with eventual winner Abigail Wallace, 9, receiving a £20 book voucher for her colourful effort.

Following the visit, Amanda Wallace, Bluebell after school club manager, said it had been of great benefit to the children.

She said: “Not all children are fully aware of the dangers of straying too close to a building site, but Kyle got the message across in a number of ways which really grabbed their interest.

“The children talked about what they’d learned for weeks afterwards and many incorporated building work and danger situations into their play, so they had clearly picked up the message.”

Kyle Goodall added that he was delighted to be able to spread such an important safety message to the children.

“Children are naturally curious about the things going on around them and building sites probably look like fun places to play, but I think the Bluebell children now understand that they can be dangerous,” he said.

“The younger children were very interested in our equipment, like hard hats, while the older ones genuinely understood the more serious message we were conveying.”

Taylor Wimpey’s Heath Meadows development will comprise high-quality three and four-bedroom homes family homes.

There are spacious show homes to view at the Heath Meadows Sales Centre which is located off Churchill Road, Leighton Buzzard and opens Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 5.30pm and Monday 10am to 2pm.
