More land should be freed up for development to boost the number of homes available in the UK for first-time buyers and others wanting to get on the property ladder, according to an industry body.

The Home Builders Federation (HBF) will deliver a manifesto tomorrow (March 10th) to highlight its concerns to the government.

The manifesto will call for more land to be made available for development. Secondly, the HBF want councils to be freed of red tape that can hold projects back. It also called for more public funding to support housing delivery and the construction industry as a whole.

HBF will launch the manifesto on the BBC's Question Time, which will feature housing minister John Healey.

Pre-empting the organisation's calls, Mr Healey today (March 9th) announced a raft of new initiatives to kickstart the UK's housing industry, including a funding boost of £83 million for the government's Home Buy Direct scheme.
