The government's plans for a second wave of eco-towns in the UK have been welcomed by an industry body.
The Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) said that the raft of green initiatives announced yesterday (March 9th) would help deliver on multiple aims including increasing housing supply and contributing to economic growth.
Housing and planning minister John Healey launched the proposals yesterday that will see local authorities gain funding to update their green expertise and advance eco-friendly developments across the country.
Dr Hugh Ellis, the TCPA's chief planner, said: "This is an historic moment. Planning can, and must, address the critical need to reshape our society and economy into a positive low carbon future.
"In the aftermath of the failure of Copenhagen it is now crucial that we drive transformational change by empowering communities to deal with their energy need. This policy is one the most dramatic and significant steps forward in the development of spatial planning. The profession has to step up to the challenge of taking communities to a low carbon future."
