Construction work on a new homes development in the north-east has begun, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has confirmed.
More than 140 properties are being built as part of a joint venture agreement between the HCA, Gentoo and Sunderland City Council.
Known as the Castletown Masterplan, the initiative forms part of a decade-long housing regeneration programme for the area and has been described as a "significant milestone" in Castletown's regeneration by Harry Trueman, the council's portfolio holder for sustainable communities.
"The new homes will give residents of Castletown a much bigger choice of high quality housing which is energy efficient and uses the most up-to-date building materials," he commented.
"This will offer a sustainable choice of housing both now and in the future."
The HCA is providing £6 million of funding for the scheme, which will see an initial 79 new homes created by March next year.
Last week, the organisation announced that a scheme in Berwick to deliver 25
affordable homes had begun.
