Planning permission for new homes will be easier to secure in the future thanks to new reforms to the system.

Housing and planning minister John Healey said the changes will remove 10,000 full planning applications for the system and make it easier for councils to build new homes.

Some £135 million is being given to councils from the housing and planning delivery grant, which was initially pledged in December last year.

Mr Healey said simpler planning applications will boost the provision of new homes across the UK.

"I am also determined to see more affordable homes both to support first-time buyers and to reduce the pressure on waiting lists for council homes," he commented.

"The extra funding is a direct incentive for councils to plan and give the go-ahead to good quality local homes in their area."

Mr Healey went on to say that the provision of land for new homes is "crucial" to maintain the country's economic recovery.

Earlier this month, Mr Healey said that £83 million is being made available to help affordable homes projects resume after the recession.
