Leading housebuilder George Wimpey has clinched a prestigious design award for its iconic Images apartment development in Gants Hill, East London.
The cutting-edge new homes development saw off a high level of competition to be named Best Architectural Project by a panel of expert and celebrity judges at the 2010 First Time Buyer magazine Readers’ Awards.

Already widely acclaimed as one of the most exciting and complex residential projects currently under way in the UK, judges praised Images for the eye-catching architecture which has marked the building out as an awe-inspiring local landmark.

Michael O’Leary, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey East London, says: “From the moment this unique project was first conceived, we have always known that Images was something really special.

“We’re absolutely delighted to collect this prestigious award, especially having come up against such an exceptional level of competition, and I’d like to thank everyone involved in the project for making it possible.”

George Wimpey’s Images was included in a shortlist of four for the Best Architectural Project prize, with Shepherds Bush Housing’s Westpoint development in West London, Servite Houses’ Sedgwick Street project in Hackney and Great Places’ Chips development in Manchester also nominated.

The winner was announced at the ceremony held at The Landmark Hotel in Marylebone, having been nominated by readers of First Time Buyer magazine and judged by a panel including Anne Ashworth from The Times Bricks & Mortar, Tommy Walsh, Marcus Wilshire, Janet Crome and First Time Buyer editor Sarah Garnett.

Images is a stunning development of 160 one and two-bedroom apartment-style homes, with a significant proportion being provided through the Homes and Communities Agency’s First Time Buyers Initiative and additional apartments available through the local housing association, Genesis Housing Group.

The project has created a truly iconic replacement to the landmark Odeon cinema on the Gants Hill roundabout, using materials such as glass and zinc to offer a striking and contemporary ‘Docklands’ feel.

The glass rotunda entrance tower linking the two main buildings of the development is a particularly arresting feature of the design, along with the impressive entrance plaza and central podium, while communal paved areas, seating, lawns and landscaped shrub beds provide a safe, pleasant and attractive environment for the new community.
