Applications to NHBC to start new housing in Great Britain in the first quarter of 2010 stood at 27,200, 74% up on the same quarter last year according to the warranty body's latest stats. Of these, 24,100 were in England, 80% up on the 13,400 starts in the first quarter of 2009.

The figures reveal the quarter saw the highest number of starts since the second quarter of 2008 in England, Wales and Scotland. However in Northern Ireland there were 800 applications, down on quarters two, three and four last year but 100 higher than quarter one.

The new figures show that 10,700 applications to NHBC to start new homes were made in March against 5,700 last year. The figures include private and public sector build.
