David Bexon, Managing Director of smartnewhomes.com, comments on the government’s localism plans:

“Today’s move by the government to reaffirm its commitment to hand planning decisions to local government and communities, will come as a blow to the housebuilding industry.

“While the public acknowledge the severity of the housing crisis, research by smartnewhomes.com shows that only 50% would support new development in their area. The government is yet to announce how local government will be incentivised to promote new build developments among their communities, but there is going to be an obvious and startling need to convince residents of the many benefits of new developments in their area when nimbyism will be the first response.

“The industry is in unanimous agreement that the bureaucratic planning system is a major stumbling block to meeting growing consumer need. If local authorities and communities are allowed to veto planning applications in their area, a whole generation of house buyers are likely to be priced out of the market as the laws of supply and demand kick in.”
