A speculative magazine advert and a large slice of fate, have resulted in a couple who were both involved in the Normandy landings during WW2, now living happily at McCarthy & Stone’s Millfield Court development, in Crawley.
The recent Armed Forces Day often brings to the forefront amazing stories, with memories both happy and sad. But this couple have a truly unique tale which has ended in marriage some 50 years after the war, giving them a real happy ending.
Ron Dunham served for the Royal Marines, with his now wife June representing the Wrens during the conflict, both training at Hayling Island at the very same time, although they never met. But it was five decades later when, in an attempt to locate colleagues he knew from his Hayling Island days, Ron placed an advert in a magazine. June spotted the advert and contacted Ron with information. They were soon sharing stories about their involvement in WW2 and to their joint amazement, realised they had been training in the exact same location all those years before. After arranging an initial meeting, Ron and June have not looked back, and got married in 1998.
Last year, they decided it was time to move to a more manageable property and wanted to move closer to where June originally grew up. They started looking for a property in the area and when they saw McCarthy & Stone’s Millfield Court development they instantly decided that was where they wanted to live.
Ron said: “As soon as we found the development our minds were made up, the style and appearance of the building really appealed to us. When my daughter and son in law visited they had preconceptions of what it would be like, but soon had a completely different viewpoint and thought it was just like a hotel! They stayed in one of the guest suites here and were very impressed with everything.”
June continued: “Living here has given us a new lease of life. The other residents are really nice and we enjoy having a cup of tea and catching up in the residents lounge and have joined the social club which organises activities and outings. We also like the area a lot, Ilfield is very pleasant and convenient, with local shops close by and a walk into Crawley only takes fifteen minutes.”
McCarthy & Stone is supporting The Royal British Legion as its ‘Charity of the Year’. The charity has been chosen due to the affinity many of McCarthy & Stone’s residents share with the Legion, especially those who have family or friends in the Armed Forces or are veterans themselves.
