Steve Lees, Director at smartnewhomes.com, comments on government proposals to increase stamp duty on poorly insulated homes:

“Energy-efficiency is fast become a pre-requisite for UK homeowners and buyers and today’s proposals by the government to penalise those buying poorly insulated homes will greatly highlight the benefits of buying a new build property and avoid stamp duty penalty charges. Those re-selling new homes will also have an advantage and could command higher asking prices.

“The housebuilding industry has responded to legislation to build energy efficient homes to ensure they meet the highest standards. These measures range from the conventional - enhanced insulation, double glazing and super efficient boilers - to the more innovative - solar panels, heat recovery ventilation systems and rainwater harvesting systems.

“Alongside any stamp duty savings new home buyers already make savings in fuel bills from the moment they move in. Interest in properties which provide homebuyers with the opportunity to substantially reduce their outgoings from day one, is set to grow considerably.”
