Britain’s leading retirement developer, McCarthy & Stone, is pleased to announce construction of ten new sites in the South East region, following its return to the land buying market.
After a turbulent eighteen months for the property sector, the specialist developer has already commenced construction at four sites in Chesham, Weybridge, Romford and Headcorn. It has also completed build and is reporting encouraging numbers of reservations at sites in Epping, Hazlemere and Woodford Green.
In addition, the programme is set to see a further six sites, Edenbridge, Petworth, Littlehampton, Ware, Aldwick, Heathfield and Herne Bay, commence build between July 2010 and April 2011.
This positive news from McCarthy & Stone is of particular importance due to the significant shortage of specialised retirement accommodation in the UK. Whilst demand for new homes continues to increase, housing production remains at a perilously low level. Therefore a focus on the right type of housing is crucial.
Sharon Callcut, marketing manager for McCarthy & Stone South East comments:
“In 2004, we estimated that there would be a shortfall of 62,500 properties by 2020, but following the downturn in the housing market and the knock on effect on housing production, the situation is potentially now much worse.
“An increase in purpose-built retirement developments will not only better service the needs of the over 60s, but could actually help address the broader issue of housing supply. The provision of retirement apartments increases the availability of ordinary housing stock for families and makes better use of under-occupied family homes that are sold on when their residents downsize.
“Our purchase and subsequent build of such prominent new sites in the South East is incredibly positive. This demonstrates our commitment to the region, as well as our ongoing objective to address the present lack of appropriate retirement accommodation.”
Staying in the family home and adapting it to meet changing needs is not always the best option for everybody. Nor is moving into a care home before that level of support is required. Retirement developments can bridge the gap between the two.
McCarthy & Stone offers two kinds of developments dependent on customers’ needs; Retirement Living offers independence combined with the peace of mind of additional security, low maintenance and companionship while Assisted Living offers an additional range of facilities such as a waitress service restaurant and flexible support services including personal care and domestic assistance. Both offer continued home ownership in later life.
