Housing minister Grant Shapps has announced details of the government's zero carbon homes policy.
Shapps confirmed that the proposed minimum level of building fabric efficiency under the zero carbon homes policy, as featured in the Code of Sustainable Homes consultation, would be adopted in future Building Regulations.
Councils and developers will also be granted greater flexibility to meet the standards. As part of this, Shapps explained that he would look into ways that developers could pay into local energy funds for wind farms and district heating schemes as two examples.
Shapps also announced that the Zero Carbon Hub would be given £600,000 to continue its work on zero carbon homes. The Hub has been asked to test what would be an appropriate level for a carbon compliance requirement for onsite measures.
HBF welcomed the new details, but warned that work on carbon compliance and local energy solutions “must provide affordable answers and reduce risk.”
