Security was the key for Brian and Pat Woodworth when deciding where to spend their retirement years.
Having been broken into at their terraced home near Manchester, the Woodworths wanted the peace of mind that a retirement development could provide. So when they looked at McCarthy & Stone’s Hodgson Court development in Burnage, the development’s security features, including a 24 hour emergency call line and CCTV and door entry system, was a reassuring factor for the couple.
Pat, aged 70, who worked as a hospital secretary, says: “We had lived in Levenshulme, Manchester, for 47 years. When our house was broken into, it was very worrying, particularly as we were getting older.”
Security wasn’t the only reason behind their decision. Pat was keen to avoid stairs in her new home, after recently suffering mobility problems. “I had a knee and a hip replacement which means I suffer with the stairs,” she explains. "So it was also important to move somewhere that had a lift.”
Now, almost one year on from their move, Pat and Brian are enjoying retired life at Hodgson Court, with former long distance lorry driver Brian, 73, handily placed to continue his hobby of bowls at the local transport club. She says: "We have settled in very nicely and it's gone very fast. I didn't retire from the eye hospital until February. It's a very big change giving up work, but I am getting used to it and there are plenty of things to do at the development.
“I like the apartment, and the people here are all nice. We have regular get-togethers. There are also lovely gardens which we can enjoy.
“We never really had anything new to move into before, so it was really nice. We hadn't really thought about a retirement apartment, but now we just feel ourselves very lucky to be here."
Hodgson Court is a development of 50 one and two bedroom apartments with prices starting from just £99,950. The development is just a few minutes walk from the shops on Burnage Lane, which includes a post office, convenience store, pharmacy and supermarket. Transport links are also good, enabling residents to get into Manchester and Stockport quickly and easily.
Each home is designed especially for retirement living, including features such as electrical sockets at a raised height to reduce bending, illuminated light switches, a camera entry system, easy grip lever taps in the bathroom and kitchen and energy efficient heating. Residents at Hodgson Court can also enjoy landscaped gardens, socialise and relax in the communal lounge and invite family and friends to stay in the development’s guest suite.
