There were 28,590 new housebuilding starts in England in the quarter to June, 13% higher than the previous quarter and 57% higher than the same quarter last year according to government figures.
Of these, 22,480 were private sector starts - 10% up on the last quarter and 58% higher than this time last year.
Completions rose by 1% quarter on quarter to 26,550, the first quarterly rise since the end of 2007.
Annual starts to June hit 98,500 up 44% on the year before.
