New home movers and buyers should make sure they actively maintain their properties in order to avoid expensive bills further down the line.

Churchill, the insurer, has said that almost half (49 per cent) of households fail to do outside work on the house such as clearing gutters and downpipes.

In addition, some 62 per cent do not maintain their roofing and check to see whether all tiles in place.

Commenting on the findings, Churchill's head of insurance Martin Hill said: "Do a top-to-toe inspection from the floor to the roof space.

"Look for signs of leaks in your attic, making sure that timbers are free from damp and woodworm."

Servicing boilers and bleeding radiators in advance of the winter can also prevent huge bills during the winter.

Regular inspections and home maintenance can be the perfect way to keep a property as new as the day you move into it.
