The net number of homes added to the housing stock in England fell to a record low of 128,680 in 2009/10, CLG has revealed.
This figure is a 23% drop on the 167,000 net number of new homes achieved in 2008/9. The previous record low was 130,510.
CLG’s data also showed that each English region saw fewer net additional homes added in 2009/10 than in the previous financial year, with the North West experiencing the largest annual decline at 38%, followed by the South East at 32%.
HBF pointed out that the figures were released merely a day after the government announced deep cuts to housing budgets as part of its spending review.
Executive chairman Stewart Baseley said: “These figures reveal the extent of the housing supply problem and the need for real action now – cutting red tape and implementing incentives so we can build the homes the country needs.”
