Six new apprentice roles have been created in Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire with the help of Government funds.
Redrow developments in Sherburn in Elmet and Malton, in North Yorkshire, Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, Halifax, in West Yorkshire, and Grimsby and Barton upon Humber, in North Lincolnshire were awarded ‘Kickstart2’ funding worth almost £3.5 million by the Homes and Communities Agency, national housing and regeneration delivery agency for England.
The cash injection will prompt the construction of 397 homes and has created six new apprenticeships. It will also safeguard jobs.
Ross Walton, construction manager for Redrow Homes (Yorkshire), commented: “Redrow has always been a strong believer in apprenticeships as they help young people gain the knowledge, skills and experience they need to fulfil a career in the housebuilding and construction industry.
“Traditionally, we’ve taken on two or three apprentices across the region each year. However, due to market conditions we haven’t taken any new apprentices on in this area over the last three years.
“This year we had hoped to recruit a couple of apprentices, but the Kickstart funding we’ve received from the Homes and Communities Agency has enabled us to take on six young people. It’s the highest number of apprentices Redrow’s Yorkshire company has ever taken on in a single year.”
David Curtis, director for Yorkshire and The Humber at the Homes and Communities Agency said: “The appointment of six apprentices by Redrow Homes (Yorkshire) is fantastic news, not only will they help provide much needed homes for local people but they have been given a fantastic work opportunity.
“The commitment by Redrow to ensure that these trainees obtain an NVQ at level 2 or 3 will ensure that they have secure jobs in the future.”
Joe Harrison, 17, a former pupil of Brigshaw High School in Castleford, has been taken on as a second year apprentice bricklayer at Saxon Court in Sherburn in Elmet, near Selby.
Adam Johnson, who attended Humberston School, Grimsby, is also 17 and a second year apprentice bricklayer based at Fox’s Fold in Barton.
First year apprentice joiner Ben Lane, 16, attended Balby Carr Community Sports College, Doncaster. He is now studying carpentry and joinery at Doncaster College while serving his apprenticeship at Danum St Giles in Doncaster.
Sam Crookes, 18, is a second year apprentice bricklayer at Kirk’s Paddock, in Grimsby.
“I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left Toll Bar Business and Enterprise College but did a taster bricklaying course and really enjoyed it,” Sam said.
“I then went to Grimsby College and passed the level one bricklaying diploma with a distinction. I’m looking forward to working with Redrow because they’ve got a good reputation.”
Nick Morrill, 16, a former pupil of Whitcliffe Mount School in Cleckheaton, is hoping he’ll be a chip off the old block.
“My dad is a joiner and I’ve worked with him. He’s inspired me to follow in his footsteps,” added Nick, a first year joinery apprentice based at Wheatley Chase, Halifax.
“I love to make and design things and I’m really looking forward to learning the trade with Redrow.”
Luke Jagger, 17, is a former Malton Secondary School pupil who’s been taken on as apprentice bricklayer at Priorpot Mews in Malton.
Redrow is committed to training young men and women in a variety of trades, and offers apprenticeships in bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, as well as plumbing; combining on-site experience and college based training to secure industry-recognised NVQ Level 2 or 3 qualifications.
Some 50 apprentices have been taken on by Redrow across England, Scotland and Wales this autumn.
