Steve Lees, Director at smartnewhomes.com, comments on the scrapping of the proposed building standards relating to government funded homes, or homes built on public land:

“Over-regulation and red-tape have been major obstacles holding back the industry for some time now: today’s pledge from Grant Shapps to reduce the regulatory burden will be met with enthusiasm, and no little relief, by developers.

“However, welcome as the announcement is, this measure is no panacea. The planning system remains confused, the much-vaunted yet unproven localism bill has been delayed, and the mortgage market remains a significant barrier to home ownership for many. A reduction in red-tape is a good first step in helping what is a vitally important British industry, but nonetheless it is only a first step.”
