Residents at a Warwickshire retirement development have dusted off their knitting needles in the interests of conservation.
Keen knitters living at McCarthy & Stone's Pardoe Court development in New Road, Studley, have come out in support of Avoncroft Museum in Worcestershire by turning their skills to making tea cosies.
They are knitting in aid of the Cosies for Conservation campaign launched by Avoncroft, a charity which rescues, conserves and preserves historic buildings and structures from across the West Midlands for future generations to enjoy.
The campaign aims to encourage people to knit a tea cosy and bring, or send it to the museum's Edwardian Tea Room where it will be displayed until it is sold to help raise funds.
Everyone who donates a tea cosy in person will be rewarded with a complimentary hot drink in the Edwardian Tea Room, while the winning cosy will receive £40 in Avoncroft gift vouchers.
The competition, which closes on 1 June 2011, is being supported by residents at Pardoe Court after they were asked by McCarthy and Stone if they would like to lend a hand.
Beth Wright, house manager at Pardoe Court, which comprises 42 one and two bedroom retirement apartments, said: "Several residents have been knitting cosies since February and are speeding along.
"They are part of the craft group that meets here once a week and have already made things such as birthday and Easter cards.
"The residents were really happy to get knitting, but want to complete the cosies in as short a time as possible because they have so many other things to do as well."
She added: "They have already made about a dozen but didn't know anything about the competition at the museum, so that might be a nice surprise if one of the residents wins."
