People looking to enjoy their retirement years in the historic cathedral city of Lincoln are being urged to consider a new development taking shape on the site of a former army barracks.
McCarthy and Stone, which pioneered the concept of private retirement housing in the UK, is launching the second phase of its Avalon Court development at the appropriately named Drill Hall in Newport, Lincoln.
After the success of the first phase of 23 retirement apartments, construction is now well underway on phase two of Avalon Court. The second phase of 39 one and two bedroom retirement homes is due for completion by August.
The first phase building, which occupies the front of the site less than half a mile from the historic Cathedral Quarter, was previously an army barracks.
Because of the building's listed status, the front façade was retained within the design.
The second phase, which is now being launched by McCarthy and Stone, is under construction at the rear of the site, on land previously occupied by housing.
Yvonne Oakden, sales consultant at Avalon Court, said: "This site was the old army barracks in Lincoln, which was used as a drill hall during World War Two.
"The old drill hall was a listed building so we had to keep the front facade and build the first phase of 23 apartments around it.
"We began selling the first phase last June, with the first residents moving in around mid-December. The first phase is now fully occupied apart from one apartment, so we are now launching phase two."
McCarthy and Stone is currently selling apartments in the second phase from plan.
Added Yvonne: "The location is brilliant. It's very good because you can walk to the cathedral and there are buses going past every 12 minutes.
"And because the second phase is in a totally separate building, it means there will be two residents' lounges and two guest suites on the site."
The historic city of Lincoln is popular with tourists, with good shopping facilities and attractions, and has excellent transport facilities with a direct rail service to London and access to places such as Newark and Gainsborough.
