Retirement developer, McCarthy & Stone, has been granted planning permission to build its first Assisted Living development in Sheffield. Planning was granted earlier this month for 64 Assisted Living retirement apartments on Abbeydale Road in Millhouses.
Steve Secker, Regional Managing Director for McCarthy & Stone, comments on the decision: "In 2004, we estimated that there would be a shortfall of 62,500 properties by 2020 in the UK, but with the recent downturn in the housing market and the knock on effect on housing production, the situation is potentially now much worse.
"Locally, there is a current shortfall of retirement accommodation. As such, we are delighted to have been granted planning permission for a much needed Assisted Living provision in Sheffield."
The apartments will be designed exclusively for people over the age of 70 needing additional assistance with their daily lives.
Each apartment will include thoughtful design features including 24 hour emergency call points, a level access shower and bath, an electrically operated window in the kitchen, electrical sockets at a raised height to reduce bending, as well as being wheelchair accessible.
Additional facilities and support services will be available, including a communal residents' lounge, a waitress service restaurant, offering a midday meal every day of the year, and a guest suite for visiting family and friends.
Furthermore, staff will be on site 24 hours a day and, as part of the service charge, one hour of domestic assistance will be available each week. For those who require it, personal care can be arranged, via an appointed care agency, to suit individual residents' needs as they arise.
Steve Secker continues: "Until recently, people having problems with daily living have had no choice other than to move in with family or into residential care, which can be stressful and a financial strain. Our new Assisted Living development in Millhouses will provide a real alternative, bridging the gap between conventional retirement developments and residential care.
"The support services on offer will be flexible and tailored to meet the changing needs of residents on either a short or longer term basis. And importantly, Assisted Living can avoid the need to ever consider more formal care alternatives, enabling residents to retain home ownership."
Construction will begin on the new development in January 2012, for a sales release in March 2013.
