New proposals published for consultation today (August 25th) will help local authorities to invest more in affordable housing by cutting bureaucracy, says housing minister Grant Shapps.
The proposals will give councils the power to trade and improve their council housing assets themselves rather than requesting permission from ministers in every case.
Homes that are already occupied will not be affected, unless the sale is to the current tenants of the property.
Mr Shapps said he also wants to put a stop to the complex regulations that stand in the way of councils boosting investment in new homes.
"Our proposals will streamline the rules so councils can recycle more receipts from these sales into improving the local availability of
affordable homes," he added.
It follows an announcement from communities secretary Eric Pickles this month that councils will be able to keep their own business rates in order to boost local jobs and companies.
