Schoolchildren who live near Taylor Wimpey's Westlow Abbey and Heritage Park developments of new homes for sale in Wixams, Bedfordshire, have been given a special health and safety lesson by the leading housebuilder.
Youngsters at Lakeview School in Wixams, near Bedford, have learned a valuable lesson about playing safe - thanks to a special visit from Taylor Wimpey South Midlands, the leading housebuilder behind a number of developments of new build homes in Bedfordshire.
Pupils were taught about the hazards of playing on or around building sites hosted by safety expert John McCarthy, on behalf of the leading housebuilder's nearby Westlow Abbey and Heritage Park developments of property for sale in Wixams.
The children found out about the many different ways they could be hurt if they were tempted to stray on to the site - by falling scaffolding, bricks or pipes, by sharp metal or glass hidden in sand, or by moving vehicles.
The school was also presented with a gift of high-visibility vests and armbands by Taylor Wimpey Sales Executive Marc Raynor, to improve youngsters' safety while out and about.
The children were also encouraged to design posters highlighting the important health and safety messages they had learned, with Cameron Eton-Mehmi (Year 1), Poppy Smith (Year 2) and Chloe Benjamin (Year 3/4) each winning book tokens for their colourful designs.
Following the visit, headteacher Sue Vint said it had been of great benefit to the pupils.
She says: "Not all of our children will have been fully aware of the dangers of straying too close to a building site, but John's visit has certainly changed that. Now that they know the risks, the children all realise that keeping away from building sites is the right thing to do."
John, from safety consultancy RG Wilbrey, was delighted to be able to spread such an important safety message to the children.
"Children are naturally curious about the things going on around them and building sites probably look like fun places to play, but I think the Lakeview pupils now understand that they're anything but," he says.
"And thanks to Taylor Wimpey's gift of high visibility vests and armbands, they'll be even safer on their journeys to and from school as the dark nights draw in."
