Plans to build an eco-friendly housing development in east Manchester have been given the green light.

Manchester City Council has approved plans for Gleeson to build Gorton Monastery Village, a 4.7 acre site next to the famous monastery, which was recently refurbished as a convention centre.

Gorton Monastery Village will be environmentally-friendly and will feature high insulation standards, energy saving appliances, and cycle and bin storage.

"Bringing high-quality family homes to this part of east Manchester sends out a very clear message that this area is undergoing a significant transformation," said Tom Russell, head of the New East Manchester development agency.

"Creating an innovative new urban village with very high standards of architectural design is incredibly exciting."

The Gorton Monastery site, which is three miles away from central Manchester, will eventually consist of nearly 70 detached, semi-detached and terraced houses.

Work on the scheme, which uses the same proportions and ratios found in the 19th century monastery, will start in the autumn.
