A Retirement Living development in Downend is perhaps the last place you'd expect to be gripped by a fitness craze. But residents at McCarthy & Stone's William Court development are rolling back the years after taking up keep fit classes!

A group of around 15 residents are taking part in the weekly, one-hour fitness class and have even been able to sample Zumba and Tai Chi sessions, all from the comfort of the development's residents' lounge.

One participant who has begun to appreciate the importance of keeping active in later life is William Court resident Esta Bentley.

Esta explains: "Coming from someone who doesn't usually enjoy exercise, I must say the keep fit classes are excellent. Our instructor, Lucy, is very caring and helpful and we've been able to try out Tai Chi, do a little bit of Zumba and now I'd like to give Linedancing a go! Obviously our classes are a lot less strenuous than ordinary fitness classes, you can even sit down for some of the exercises, but it is a lot of fun and I really look forward to the sessions.

"The classes have been very popular - we've been getting more and more residents joining each week and they're obviously enjoying themselves as they keep coming back."

William Court, which has been designed exclusively for the over 60s, consists of 37 low-maintenance one and two bedroom retirement apartments located on Overnhill Road in Downend.

All apartments benefit from a host of specialist features to make life more manageable, such as electrical sockets at a raised height to reduce bending, illuminated light switches, and a camera entry system for added security.

The development itself is perfect for those who enjoy mixing with like-minded people in a relaxing environment, and comes furnished with a dedicated communal residents' lounge and landscaped gardens, which are ideal for socialising. There is also a house manager who oversees the running of the development, for additional peace of mind.

Esta adds: "The house manager Fiona does an excellent job; she arranges a variety of events and activities including a coffee morning, afternoon tea as well as a monthly lunch, all of which helps to give William Court a lovely community feel."

Prices currently start at £179,950. For further information, visit the development, open daily from 10.30am to 5.00pm.
