Barratt Homes will start work this week on the firm's greenest-ever development, it has been announced.

Eco-friendly features at the Watford development include building materials that mitigate the highs and lows of indoor temperatures, solar panels to heat water, photovoltaic panels to supply power and a rainwater harvesting facility for flushing toilets.

According to the developer, the construction will be so environmentally friendly that it would have no problems meeting the government's zero stamp duty criteria.

Mark Clare, Barratt Developments chief, said: "If the UK is to move to zero-carbon new housing, we have to rapidly establish what works best for the consumer and the environment.

"The most exciting aspect of the Barratt 'Green House' is that it's not designed as a one off: we will take what works and apply it to housebuilding across the country."

Following the Stern Review that advocated the economic benefits of migrating to green technology, the government has said that housebuilders must make sure that all new homes are carbon neutral by 2016.
