The Spanish authorities have said they may demolish thousands of beach properties along Spain's coastlines.

Although there are laws that say developers cannot build within 100 metres of the coast, housebuilders have continued to build on Spain's beaches, as well as the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Now the Spanish government has announced a €5billion (£3.4 billion) scheme to reclaim 776 km of coastal land, although it would need the cooperation of local authorities.

Antonio Serrano, from the environment ministry, said: "We're not talking about mass demolitions here. It would be done on a case by case basis and only in isolated cases."

"Without the agreement of regional governments and town halls it will not be possible to implement the plan."

The average property price in Spain rose by 1.4 per cent in October, rising to €248,000, according to data from Kyero.com.
