Now is good opportunity for first time buyers to make a move into the housing market, according to the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA).

NAEA president Chris Brown said that buyers free of any baggage like an old home that needs selling are in an enviable position.

First time buyers and those who are in rented accommodation are best placed to make the transition, he stated.

"There has probably never been a better time to buy for a very long time," he remarked.

Mr Brown said buyers have got a lot more "pulling power" and are a growing influence on the housing market.

According to Nationwide building society, house prices fell by 0.9 per cent in June, less than half the rate of the previous month.

From Wednesday, Nationwide will reduce the price of its tracker and fixed-rate mortgage deals, and introduce a new two-year tracker.
