It is good that the government is providing more funding towards the Homebuy Direct scheme, it is claimed.

Helen Adams, managing director at FirstRungNow.com, says that so far, the uptake has not been as good as expected, which may be due to lending problems.

"It is a start; it is a move in the right direction, but obviously the more money being given to help first-time buyers, the better," she continues.

Ms Adams believes that a backdrop of security is needed to make things better for first-time buyers, who need to feel secure in their employment before getting on the property ladder.

In the Budget on April 22nd, Chancellor Alistair Darling extended the stamp duty holiday on properties sold for up to £175,000 to December 31st 2009.

He also pledged a further £80 million funding for the HomeBuy Direct scheme, which has received more than 32,000 enquiries since September 2008.ADNFCR-1100-ID-19138995-ADNFCR
