Edinburgh owes its world famous reputation for being one of the most beautiful cities in the world to its stunning architecture – which continues to evolve, blending the capital’s rich heritage with exciting contemporary designs. So, what might the Scottish capital look like in years to come?
Quartermile, the striking development bordering The Meadows, thought that the best people to ask should be the future generation and so invited local schools George Heriot’s and St Thomas of Aquins to create their own visions.
Each school entered numerous pieces of work all with their own ideas of what Edinburgh might look like one day. The new tram network features in many of the pieces along with futuristic and contemporary buildings and Edinburgh’s own version of The London Eye.
Sarah Jamieson, teacher of Art and Design at George Heriot’s, commented: “The children have particularly enjoyed this assignment and have been working really hard to portray their own visions of Edinburgh of the future. We are so pleased with the results and think they look fantastic on display.”
The children’s art has been scanned onto two large hoarding boards at Quartermile and the public can vote for their favourite in the marketing centre at Quartermile. The school with the most votes will receive £500 towards art equipment while the winning pupil from each school will be given a choice from a desirable list of prizes ranging from an iPod nano to a helicopter ride for them and a friend.
Anna Ewan, Head of Art at St Thomas of Aquins, said: “We were delighted when Quartermile invited us to participate in the competition and when we discussed it with the kids they were eager to take part. They have had a brilliant time creating their works of art and are so excited that they are now on display for all to see.”
Lorraine Paterson, Sales & Marketing Director for Gladedale Capital, commented: “We knew that the children of Edinburgh would have creative ideas but they surpassed our already high expectations. The pictures look fantastic and we hope that people will take the time to look at their work and vote for their favourite.”
Voting for the competition will close on Monday 31 August with the winning school and pupil announced on Thursday 3 September.
To vote please visit the Quartermile Marketing Centre from 8th June at 1 Lauriston Place, EH3 9AU which is open daily from 10.30am to 5.30pm and from 10.30am to 7.30pm on Thursdays.
