It is important for more affordable homes to be built for those who need them, it has been said.

Katy John, spokesperson at Pricedout.org.uk, said the government needs to keep to its promise of supplying three million new homes by 2020 to ensure people get the properties they deserve.

"There are still many people on housing waiting lists across the UK and an estimated one million first-time buyers waiting to buy affordable homes," she revealed.

Wider issues in the housing shortage need to be addressed, Ms John continued, which will help ensure those who want to get on the property ladder are able to do so.

Communities and Local Government revealed on May 21st that the number of seasonally-adjusted housing starts in the first quarter of 2009 had increased by 13 per cent compared to the last quarter of 2008.
