Housing minister John Healey has confirmed that the budget for the Kickstart programme has been increased from £400 million to £1 billion.

The Kickstart programme aims to unlock private sector developments that have stalled in the downturn. Healey said the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) had received over 300 bids from developers for Kickstart funding. The HCA is currently assessing the bids and the successful schemes will be announced later this month.

Healey’s announcement is part of a package of measures announced today (July 17) on housing. Other measures include plans for further funding under the housing private finance initiative (pfi) in order to deliver more affordable homes including for local authorities.
