Housing minister John Healey has announced the second phase of what the government says is the biggest council house building programme in 20 years.

He has writtern to all council leaders in England encouraging them to submit bids for a slice of £180 million of investment to fund construction of a further 1,200 new council homes.

This, he said, was in addition to the 2,000 homes he gave the go ahead to earlier in September.
