For homebuyers looking for a location steeped in history mixed with modern living, Durham could be the perfect location.
The north-east city is home to a renowned university that was founded in 1832. It also has many other historic buildings on offer, including a cathedral and castle, with guided tours of both available.
For modern life, the Princes Bishop shopping centre provides a range of retailers in one place and if residents want to eat out the city has many options, including the Walkergate centre which houses eight restaurants and bars.
The monthly farmers' market offers a fresh range of produce and visitors are encouraged to take in the cobbled area, which has street entertainers in the summer months.
To escape the busy town, Durham tourism recommends taking a trip to the riverbanks which can be reached in minutes from the town centre.
Homeowners will also find a theatre, many museums, art galleries and parks to grab their interest, as well as the racecourse made famous by the annual Durham Regatta which takes place in June.
With great links across the region, including to Newcastle, the airport is within 30 minutes drive. By train, residents can reach London in three hours and Edinburgh in two.
For homeowners who fancy a change, Barratt Homes is offering people a part exchange on their old property, with an added incentive of £185 a month mortgage subsidy until 2011, which means lower monthly outgoings.
The company claims that the scheme can take the stress out of changing home. It says: "With a guaranteed cash buyer, no agent's fees and no chains, you are able to move quickly with no hassle."
Properties are available at its Sacriston development in Holly Crescent, three miles from the centre of Durham. The village is close to local attractions including a mining museum. Prices start from £184,000 and go up to £201,000 for a four-bedroom family home.
The location has three types of property on offer in the former mining community, including the Gloucester - a detached home with a garage - the Ripon, a family home with a coordinated main bathroom and the Alderney, a property that boasts French doors leading to the rear garden.
