The UK government is to launch the most intensive green home construction programme in its history, in a bid to reach new targets for eco-towns.
Housing minister John Healey today (February 8th) announced that the developments, which would contain show homes, would serve as blueprints for eco-towns nationwide.
Approximately £60 million of funding has been given for the construction of the homes planned since last year in four areas of the UK Whitehill-Bordon, St Austell in Cornwall, north west Bicester in Oxford and Rackheath in Norfolk.
Homes will feature advanced green technologies, including smart metering, low carbon waste and recycling facilities and electric car charging points.
According to Mr Healey, a third of the properties will be affordable, with many of the show homes eventually going on sale.
He said that the project is intended to be holistic, with schools and transport links also being subject to energy-saving measures. In addition to this, workers in the construction industry are set to benefit with the schemes generating around 800 jobs.
