As children, our mum’s are considered to be at the very heart of the home and family, and according to recent research from McCarthy & Stone, the national retirement developer, this doesn’t end as we get older and fly the nest. A national survey of 35-50 years olds showed that even as adults, our mums continue to provide a one stop shop for help and advice on everything from the best way to cook a Sunday roast to sewing on buttons, and even how to climb the career ladder.

The art of creating good old fashioned home cooked food ‘just like mum used to make’ is alive and well, with 48% of respondents in Scotland admitting that they still go to their mums for culinary tips and advice. Similarly, over a third of those asked regularly asked their mum for help with sewing, alterations and repairs, closely followed by 35% admitting that they help with childcare and babysitting. However, only 4% said they would go to their mum for fashion and style advice!

With mums continuing to fulfil such an important role in modern society, it’s no wonder that 56% of people in Scotland speak to their mum at least two or three times a week and 30% wished they lived closer.

McCarthy & Stone’s marketing executive Claire Dunlop, comments: “This research really highlights not only how important our mums remain even if we’ve grown up ourselves and moved away, but also the aspirations that we have for them as they get older. More than half of those that we spoke to believe that living closer to their mum would help them spend more time together, and 49% said it would help ease worries about them living on their own in later years.

“Peace of mind is a major influence for both our prospective purchasers and their families and a large number of our residents have moved to be nearer to their families. With a 24 hour Careline, on-site house manager and security entrance system, our developments offer the reassurance that treasured relatives are living somewhere safe and easy to maintain and that offers independence and an active community environment.”

McCarthy & Stone retirement developments offer a range of benefits for the over 60s from fuss free gardens and courtyards, to communal lounges where residents can get together for a chat and a cup of tea. There’s no need to worry about maintenance and the house manager looks after all the day to day running. Guest suites mean that there is always room for families and friends to stay and a security entrance system, development lift and 24-hour Careline provide peace of mind for both residents and their families.

McCarthy & Stone is currently offering a range of one and two bedroom apartments in 12 locations across Scotland with a range of starting prices to suit a wide range of budgets.
