Shared ownership 'an increasingly popular option'

Home seekers trying to get onto the housing ladder should consider shared ownership, a property news website has recommended.

Firstrung said a growing number of first-time buyers are looking towards joint ownership "because they think it's the new big web idea".

According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, first-time buyers have a 350 per cent lower chance of affording a home than they did in 1996.

Paul Holmes, chief executive of Firstrung, said: "We're seeing new entrants to the joint ownership co-buying marketplace, in terms of websites setting up joint ownership opportunities."

He said the best joint ownership agreements are often between friends or family members.

According to Redrow, new-build apartments that have two bedrooms and two bathrooms would suit friends who are sharing "as a means to get onto the property ladder".

Cooper Court in Hazel Grove, south Manchester, is one development where this is possible, the developer said.
