Ten new eco-towns for Britain, says Brown

The government has said it plans to build hundreds of thousand of eco-homes across the UK.

A total of ten new eco-towns will be built, according to the prime minister, each of which will comprise 100,000 homes.

The properties will be built on brownfield sites and will be powered by energy derived from sustainable resources.

Gordon Brown said: "My aim by 2010 is two million more homeowners than in 1997.

"And for the first time in nearly half a century we will show the imagination to build new towns - eco-towns with low and zero carbon homes."

The government has already said that all new homes must be carbon-neutral by 2016.

A number of homebuilders have already started investing in environmentally-friendly new-builds.

Gleeson, for example, was recently given the go-ahead by Manchester councillors to build Gorton Monastery Village, which will boast high insulation standards and energy saving appliances.
